Building Climate-Resilient Communities in Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan is highly vulnerable to climate change because of its glaciers, mountain ecosystems, rivers, and dependence on climate-sensitive livelihoods. Glacier melt, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods, landslides, and changing water availability pose risks to communities, agriculture, roads, and other infrastructure.
EcoCivic Development Services (EDS) aims to support government departments, NGOs, INGOs, development partners, and local institutions through professional services that strengthen climate awareness, disaster preparedness, environmental sustainability, and community resilience.
Gilgit-Baltistan: Climate Facts & Figures
3,044 glacial lakes: A government GLOF-II project overview reports this total across Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa combined.
33 potentially hazardous lakes: The same overview identifies 33 lakes as prone to hazardous glacial lake outburst flooding across the two regions.
24 valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan: The GLOF-II project works to strengthen climate resilience in 24 valleys across 10 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, alongside 5 districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Early warning and preparedness: Project interventions include community-based early warning systems, disaster-risk awareness, capacity building, and climate-responsive planning.

Climate Change Awareness: Supporting awareness sessions, educational campaigns, and community engagement on climate risks and environmental protection.
Disaster Risk Reduction: Assisting with community risk assessments, preparedness plans, local vulnerability mapping, and awareness of flood and landslide risks.
Glacier and Water Resource Protection: Promoting sustainable water use, watershed conservation, and community participation in protecting local water resources.
Climate-Resilient Livelihoods: Supporting research and planning for climate-smart agriculture, sustainable tourism, and alternative livelihood opportunities.
Ecosystem Restoration: Supporting forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, land protection, and sustainable natural resource management.
Research, GIS and Monitoring: Providing data collection, GIS mapping, community assessments, project planning, monitoring and evaluation, and technical reporting for climate-related initiatives.
EDS recognizes that effective climate action requires local knowledge, reliable data, community participation, and coordination among relevant institutions. We aim to support practical, locally informed solutions suited to the different environmental and livelihood conditions of Gilgit-Baltistan.
We aim to contribute to a safer and more climate-resilient Gilgit-Baltistan by supporting community preparedness, environmental awareness, sustainable development, and evidence-based planning for future generations.
