Promoting Local Economic Opportunities
Mountain Communities and Nature Partnership (MCNP) aims to improve livelihoods and strengthen community resilience in Gilgit-Baltistan. Many households depend on agriculture, fruit production, livestock, handicrafts, tourism, and small businesses. MCNP seeks to support these activities through skills development, entrepreneurship, and sustainable use of local resources.
Skills Development and Employment: Promote vocational training and practical skills that can help local people access employment and self-employment opportunities.
Agriculture and Fruit Processing: Encourage improved fruit handling, processing, packaging, storage, and marketing to help farmers add value to local products.
Small Business Development: Support local entrepreneurs, traditional handicrafts, home-based businesses, and community-based tourism.
Community Participation: Encourage village organizations and local communities to identify their needs and participate in development planning.
The Labour Market Assessment of Gilgit-Baltistan (2025) identified an estimated demand for 3,801 skilled positions in agribusiness. These included 818 agricultural machinery operators and 240 fruit-processing experts. The findings highlight opportunities for vocational training and agricultural enterprise development.
How MCNP Aims to Contribute
MCNP plans to promote livelihood skills, support small enterprises, encourage women's economic participation, and build partnerships that help mountain families develop sustainable sources of income.
